NEWSLETTER 19 FEBRUARY 2025

Newsletter Nordensköldsloppet

The countdown is on! In just six weeks, the world's longest ski race will take place. Nordenskiöldsloppet 2025 starts on March 29 at 05:00 at Jokkmokk Ski Stadium.

We, the team behind this extraordinary race, warmly welcome you to Jokkmokk!

Here’s the latest information to help you prepare for the challenge:

SNOW DEPTH

We’ve received many questions about the snow conditions in Jokkmokk. Currently, the snow depth is 35 cm. While we hope for more snowfall to follow our planned route, we have a backup plan in place if needed.

Based on past years, we expect additional snowfall in late February and March.

EQUIPEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS

Nordenskiöldsloppet is a classic technique race—using skate technique will result in disqualification! To ensure a smooth race, we recommend bringing the following:

* Hydration belt
* Headlamp (Ensure batteries are fully charged, and carry spares as they discharge quickly in cold temperatures. It will be dark between 18:00–05:00.)
* Tight-fitting glasses (to protect against sun, wind, and cold)
* Race-issued reflector (received at registration; attach it to your bib/clothing for visibility in the dark)

For ski poles, we recommend using larger baskets rather than small racing ones to improve stability in fresh or drifting snow.

When picking up your race number, you will receive three packing bags for extra clothing. These can be handed in for transport to the Bälkasgårro and Njavve checkpoints. The third bag is for you to leave clothes at the starting point

CHECKPOINTS & NUTRITION

There are 19 food and drink checkpoints along the course. All except the first checkpoint offer:

* Umara sports drink
* Blueberry soup
* Coffee & broth
* Energy bars & gels (1 per skier per checkpoint)
* Bananas, buns, cheese sandwiches, and water

Three checkpoints serve hot meals.

At Brändön (first and last checkpoint), you will find Umara sports drink, energy bars, gel, coffee, buns, and water.

15% DISCOUNT ON UMARA PRODUCTS

SPECIAL DIETARY NEDDS

If you require special food (e.g., vegan options), please prepare and hand in your food packages at the race office no later than Friday, March 28 at 10:00.

RACE OFFICE

The race office is located at Västra Torggatan 13 (the old pharmacy) in Jokkmokk.
It opens on Thursday, March 27 at 10:00.

SNOWMOBILES & SERICE TRACKS

Snowmobiles are strictly forbidden on the race course!
A designated service track for snowmobiles runs parallel to the course. Please use this track to avoid interfering with skiers.

Service tracks occasionally diverge from the race course. Service points for athlete support are available between main checkpoints.

DRIVING BY CAR TO CHECKPOINTS

Driving by car to Checkpoints

Most of Nordenskiöldsloppet takes place in remote areas with limited mobile coverage. If you plan to follow the race by car, you can reach the following checkpoints:

🚗 Brändön (15 km)
🚗 Njavve (turning point at 108 km & 111 km)
🚗 Purkijaur (201 km)
🚗 Brändön (206 km)

🚗 Skabram (217 km)

WAXING SERVICE
You can book the waxing service provided by Ski-Go by logging into the registration where you signed up. Registration for the waxing service is still open.

BUSES FROM LULEÅ AIRPORT
There are buses from Luleå Airport to Jokkmokk on Thursday evening and Friday afternoon. The buses return on Sunday morning and Monday morning.

You can find the schedules on the website under the section "Travel and Accommodation."

IF YOU NEED TO WITHDRAW FROM THE RACE

If you have to stop racing, do so at a checkpoint where transport back to Jokkmokk is arranged.

Avoid stopping at Tjåmotis if possible, as the return trip by snowmobile is long and can be challenging when exhausted.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

* Keep nature clean! All waste must be placed in bins at the checkpoints.
* Littering along the course is strictly prohibited. If you need to dispose of waste, do so at the next checkpoint.

Any equipment left along the course is at your own risk.

We are excited to see you in Jokkmokk soon! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Good luck with your preparations!

World's longest ski race joins Ski Classics Challengers series

Nordenskiöldsloppet becomes part of the Ski Classics Challengers circuit with a 220km long-distance skiing race in classic technique in Jokkmokk, Sweden, on March 29, 2025.

Nordenskiöldsloppet, considered the world's longest ski race, is taking place in Jokkmokk, in northernmost Sweden, and in 2025 is celebrating its 8th edition. The 220km classic event now joins the Ski Classics Challengers circuit for the upcoming edition on March 29, 2025.

The Local Organizing Committee is pleased to join the Ski Classics Challengers calendar:

"It will be exciting and interesting to be part of the Ski Classics series. After seven editions we have carried out with top ratings from the skiers, we feel it is natural to now become a part of Ski Classics Challengers," says Göran Hedemalm, Chairman of the Board Nordenskiöldsloppet and adds:

"We think it's time that even northernmost Sweden has a Ski Classics Challengers competition. The fact that it will also be the longest event in Ski Classics feels extra good. Our goal is to be the longest ski race, but also a race that skiers will remember for the high level of service and the friendly treatment they receive from all officials."

Nordenskiöldsloppet – Ski Classics Challengers

The world's longest ski race is now part of the Ski Classics Challengers series. The 220km race is always held on the last weekend of March in Jokkmokk in northernmost Sweden.

The racecourse runs from Jokkmokk, winding straight through the beautiful Lapland landscape and turning into Njavve. It runs through untouched wilderness north of the Arctic Circle and follows a ski historical route from 1884. Then, polar explorer Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld organized the race to prove that his expedition members could cover long distances in a short time. The winner in 1884 was Pavva Lasse Nilsson Tuorda, with a time of 21 hours and 22 minutes, which is also today's medal time.

The race is held in classic style and is open to both elite and recreational skiers looking for the ultimate endurance test on a pair of skis. After the 05:00 CET start, skiers have 30 hours to complete the race. Along the course, 16 hydration stations are waiting to provide participants with all the energy they need.
