The return in modern times

After the race anno 1884, there would not be any more race over such an extreme distance for a very long time. The break lasted until 2016 when Nordenskiöldsloppet got revived as an ultra competition. That this historic ski race has come back to its original length and - to a large extent - original course was an initiative of Wolfgang Mehl. Between 2016 and 2022, Mehl organized the race six times as race director together with Jokkmokks SK and an organization of enthusiasts.

The race almost immediately became a hot topic and quickly managed to establish itself as the ultimate challenge on a pair of skis, both for the elite and amateurs, from near and far. While several champions chose to return year after year, the race's credo has always been that all skiers, regardless of finish time, are equally important and deserve the same service: “In our eyes, everyone who only gets to the starting line is already a hero. And to then reach the finish line of the world's probably toughest race is a inbelievable feat itself”, says Wolfgang Mehl.

In 2022, the founder of the modern Nodenskiöldsloppet decided to leave his role. During the work of forming a new organization that would ensure the race's future and development, Nordenskiöldsloppet took a break in 2023 to return with a new team in 2024.

The main owner and organizer of the Nordenskiölsloppet is now Jokkmokks SK - Sweden's oldest ski club.

A warm welcome to Jokkmokk!
